Jiva Announced as Nominee for Postcode Lotteries Green Challenge

Jiva was today announced as one of the 7 British start-ups in the final 25 shortlisted across Europe as part of the Postcode Lotteries Green Challenge – Europe’s most prestigious annual sustainability competition.

The top 25 organisations out of 650 applications now edge closer to being crowned the overall Postcode Lotteries Green Challenge winner and receiving €500,000 later this year.

Among this year’s shortlisted companies is a record number of British start-ups that are innovating to tackle global issues in the form of the circular economy, ranging from plastic pollution to reducing the impact of electronic waste.

Along with Jiva, the six other shortlisted British start-ups are: AirEx, Colorifix, Naturbeads, Safety Net Technologies, SoluBlue and Spintex.

Naturbeads is a fellow start-up in the portfolio of Jiva’s investor, Sky Ocean Ventures. They are focusing on producing natural and biodegradable microbeads from renewable and sustainable resources to replace polluting fossil-fuel based microbeads in many everyday products.

Jack Herring, Jiva’s CEO, was able to work with Dutch videographers Circular Stories as part of the process in order to tell his story of how Soluboard® came to exist. Postcode Lotteries Green Challenge rewards British, Dutch, German, Norwegian and Swedish start-ups that successfully combine sustainability, entrepreneurship and creativity to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Since it began in 2007, the competition has rewarded a variety of businesses tackling a range of environmental issues. The 2014 winner, bio-bean, is a UK company that recycles coffee into value at an industrial scale, creating a variety of efficient, sustainable products for both consumer and industrial markets.

If Jiva is lucky enough to be selected as one of the five finalists, Jack Herring will be making the journey to the Grand Final in Amsterdam in September (health and travel regulation permitting), where the overall winner will be crowned.

The competition awards €500,000 to the overall winner while the runner-up receives €200,000 and the three other finalists receive €100,000 each. As a potential finalist, Jiva would have the chance to participate in a bespoke accelerator programme to identify and tackle Jiva’s biggest hurdles.
